lyrics

THE HURRICANE

At the edge of the universe
On a rain-battered isle
I drifted alone
Or so it seemed
Who could really tell?
With the fog rolling in so fast it felt like an omen

But oh, I thought I saw you again
Caught in a hurricane wind

I threw my anchor around the trunk of a tree
Whose branches held a dead horse that tried to fly away
On that day many things that should float did sink
And many things that should sink did float

Once a paradise where palm trees grow
And blue butterflies
But then clouds covered the sun
And turned this Eden into a Nile
And I’d have been lucky if the tide stopped at my eyes

Did I see your eyes inside the rain?
Your hands inside the rain?
Were you conducting winds and rain?
Was this your this hurricane?
Or was our fate the same?
To return again and again
To the wreckage
Under a shrapnel weathervane
And endless rain

And now the wind goes whipping and roaring
And now the thunder goes to cracking and rumbling
How much could I take?
It threw me so far
And there was no way to keep your mind
When each wave shoved the shoreline
And no story found a spine
Except the sight of your ghost
Invading my mind like blackberry vines

But oh, I’m drawn toward the abyss
Caught in this hurricane’s fist
How much could I take?

Influences include Leonard Cohen, Talking Heads, Portishead, Harry Nilsson, Björk, and Elliott Smith. ... more
